Needham Soccer Splits Weymouth Doubleheader

October 3, 2025

• Each team finished with a 1-0 score, but the Girls were victorious, while the Boys fell.

On Needham Soccer Night at Memorial Field, the Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer teams faced off with Weymouth and finished on opposite sides of a victory. While the Girls won 1-0, the Boys fell 1-0.

The Girls came into the matchup at 4-2-1 and ranked #11 in the MIAA Division 1 Power Rankings, just released for the first time this fall on Friday, September 26th. A 5:15pm start time on the hill at Memorial, the #22 ranked Weymouth still hadn’t won a game this season, tying their first four games before losing two in a row.

But the Wildcats played Needham tough, holding the Rockets to just one first half shot on goal and settling for a 0-0 tie at halftime. Weymouth had three SOG in the first, then added four more in the second half, but they failed to put one past Rockets Keeper Maggie Peterson.

Needham added four shots on goal in the second half, including the game’s only goal early in the second half, courtesy of Rockets Senior Captain Hannah Levine. On the game, Weymouth outshot Needham 7-5, while the Rockets had the edge in corner kicks, 6-2.

In the MIAA Power Rankings released on Friday, October 3rd, Needham (5-2-1) rose from #11 to #8 in D1. Despite the loss, Weymouth moved up from #22 to #20.

The two schools would meet right after the Girls game in Boys Soccer, featuring two of the top teams in the state. Needham, at 7-1-1, was #3 in the MIAA D1 rankings, while Weymouth was #2. Over the previous week, Needham played two other highly ranked teams, losing 1-0 at home to D2 #1 Oliver Ames, then beating D1 #1 St. John’s Prep 2-1.

Against Weymouth, Needham failed to register a single shot on goal in the first half and only could muster one all game. They took eight total shots that either went wide to either side or over the crossbar.

For their part, the Wildcats only had three shots on goal in the game, but they also scored, with just over 11 minutes to go. Weymouth also 8 off target shots in the second half, nine on the game.

In the newly released MIAA Power Rankings on October 3rd, both teams held their ground, with Weymouth staying at #2 and Needham still at #3 despite the loss.

The Needham Girls and Boys will once again be in doubleheader action on Saturday, October 4th, when they visit Newton South with the Girls playing at 4 p.m. and the Boys at 6 p.m.
